SHRM Certification

Earning your SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential establishes you as a recognized expert in the HR field. These certifications recognize that HR professionals are at the core of leading organizational success:
  • Built on one singular Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK™) designed to elevate the HR profession around the world.
  • Tests the HR professional’s competency— the ability to put that knowledge to work through critical thinking and application.
  • Demonstrates that the HR professional is a technical expert and has mastered the application of HR technical and behavioral competencies, through practice and experience, to drive business results.

Certification Requirements:

  • Applicants must provide proof of working in an HR role for more than 1,000 hours within a calendar year (1 year of experience).
  • HR experience may be in an HR exempt or nonexempt capacity.
  • HR experience may be classified directly, as working in an HR role, or indirectly, by consulting, educating or researching HR practices linked specifically to human resource management.
  • SHRM membership is not required.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) administers the following exams:

SHRM Certified Professionals (SHRM-CP): For HR professionals who are engaged and implementing policies and strategies, serving as the point of contact for staff and stakeholders, delivering HR services, and performing operational HR functions.
  • Computer based; 4 hours complete. 
  • 160 questions, 110 knowledge, and 50 scenario-based SJIs.
SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP): For HR professionals who are engaged in developing strategies, leading the HR function, fostering influence in the community, analyzing performance metrics, and aligning HR strategies to organizational goals.
  • Computer based; 4 hours to complete.
  • 160 questions, 110 knowledge, and 50 situational judgment SJIs.
