Women in Leadership

Engage. Equip. Empower.

The Women in Leadership Certificate Program provides targeted training designed to equip and empower women leaders to live into their leadership potential by:

  • Examining unique difficulties and competencies that make leadership for women both a challenge and an asset
  • Networking with other leaders invested in raising awareness and building women leaders
  • Applying practical approaches for developing a grounded sense of confidence and a toolbox of resources that will help each individual live into her leadership potential

Who: Open to all; targeted for women who are managers, supervisors and/or wanting to take a leadership role within their organization.

What: A four-part online series of leadership courses that can be taken independently or in a sequence as part of the certificate program.

Program features include:

  • 100% Online: courses are easily accessible in an online format to work around your career, your family and your life
  • Small class sizes: class size is limited to increase peer and instructor interaction
  • Highly qualified instructors: courses are designed and facilitated by NNU women professors who have risen to leadership positions
  • Student work-load: each course will take approximately 4-5 hours per week
  • Length: each course is 5-6 weeks, with the full certificate program being completed in 22 weeks

When: Ongoing. Courses can be taken in sequence for certification or independently for personal and/or professional development. The next series in the certification program will be:

Course Descriptions

Walking Backwards in High Heels

This course begins to untangle the complexities of how women navigate effectively in the workforce. Through the sharing of experience, narratives, and research the intricacies and pitfalls in the paths towards successful leadership will be illuminated. Focusing on the cultural and unseen forces that shape values and perspective, this course begins the journey towards successful and fulfilling leadership for women who want to learn how their unique challenges and gifts make them assets in the world

Through this course, you will do the following:

  • Hear the perspectives of women in leadership
  • Explore the individual stories of women who are in leadership
  • Examine the barriers, issues, and difficulty of being a woman in leadership
  • Discuss the unseen barriers of leading as a woman.
  • Describe the social and cultural forces that inhibit women from ambitious or credit-seeking behavior
  • Explore the familial responsibilities inherent in traditional female roles, including childcare and elderly parent care and concept of an off ramp/on ramp work life-cycle.

Woman in the Arena

Women continue to be largely underrepresented in leadership roles across industries, but more are choosing to pursue positions of influence—choosing to boldly engage and ‘enter the arena.’ The arena can feel threatening, but only those who choose to enter have a chance at victory. Through this course, participants will examine the limiting beliefs that keep them from performing at their best, then learn practical approaches for developing a grounded sense of confidence, balanced with openness. Participants will conclude this course with a clear, personal definition of success, and the confidence to pursue it.

Through this course, you will do the following:

  • Increase awareness of limiting beliefs
  • Shift from “Armored Leadership” to “Daring Leadership”
  • Identify your core values
  • Explore practical approaches to grounding yourself in confidence
  • Learn how to balance grounded confidence with vulnerability, empathy, and curiosity to build connection
  • Articulate your personal definition of success

Your Leadership GPS

Understanding who you are as a leader is a necessary step in growing your leadership acumen. This course leads participants through an evaluation of their current leadership in light of the four components of authentic leadership: self-awareness, balanced processing, relationship transparency, and internalized moral perspective. Participants will consider their own role as an aspiring or practicing leader and identify their own personal leadership characteristics and qualities, focusing on areas of growth and development. This course will emphasize both theory and practices, seeking to apply learning to participants’ current context.

Through this course, you will do the following:

  • Reflect on how to lead authentically
  • Explore who you are as a leader
  • Explore how different personalities lead differently
  • Examine gender differences in communication styles
  • Evaluate your current leadership in light of the four components of authentic leadership: self-awareness, balanced processing, relationship transparency, and internalized moral perspective
  • Align virtues and values with leadership behaviors

Leading Well

What does it mean to lead well as a woman? In this capstone course, participants will examine top leadership competencies through the lens of leading as a woman. Leadership presents challenges, and those challenges can be unique for women. This course will explore how successful women leaders navigated the challenges of leadership. Participants will consider leadership competencies in light of how they lead, identifying their own personal leadership philosophy. This course will focus on both theory and practices, seeking to provide opportunities for application.

Through this course, you will do the following:

  • Articulate personal leadership philosophy
  • Learn from the leadership stories of other women leaders
  • Develop strategies, through the lens of best practices, for navigating the double-binds that often face women leaders
  • Collaborate with other leaders to gain a better understanding of leadership competencies
